Signs of Poor Ventilation:
There are some things to look for when figuring out whether or not a commercial kitchen system is getting enough air.
Some common signs are:
- Doors do not close and open properly. If doors are difficult to open or slamming shut, this is a sign of an imbalanced air circulation, or air replacement in the room. Make sure the filters are fans are working properly.
- Drafting: If the make up air is immediately drawn to the exhaust hood, down drafting can occur. This causes a serious fire risk to the kitchen. Check air velocity of the air replacement system.
- Lingering smoke: In a commercial kitchen, if there is lingering smoke, that means that the area is not properly ventilated. If this problem is not addressed quickly, it can lead to serious health hazards in the area.
- Exhaust fan problems: When a commercial exhaust fan stops working, it could be that the fan is overworked. This means that the motor has to work harder when the return air system is not working simultaneously with the commercial vent hood.
- Flies in the kitchen: This is a sign that the replacement air fan is not efficient or working properly. Flies are attracted to heat and odors that are produced in the kitchen from cooking and preparing food. When there is poor ventilation and the doors are open, the flies can become sucked into the kitchen. Having flies and other insects in the room is unsanitary and is a health hazard.
